St Luke’s Church of England Primary School

Hampshire, UK

What makes St Luke's an Accredited School?

This one-form village school stood out for us because they made time to develop their Maths Lead. Doing so meant that they could support and embed the approach throughout the school — for example, via team teaching. We were impressed by the way the school engaged all stakeholders, including governors, pupils, and parents. To top it all off, the students possessed outstanding journaling schools.

“Children are encouraged to talk in full sentences about their maths learning and are really drilled down on what numbers represent.”

– Rachel Coplen, Head of School

In their own words

Our Maths — No Problem! journey

As a school, St Luke’s has always focused, and will continue to focus, on high quality CPD. In the Summer of 2015, our headteacher and maths leader attended Maths — No Problem! training in Oxford. In order for staff to fully engage with the approach, we booked two full Inset days with a Maths — No Problem! Trainer. As a result, all teachers and teaching assistants are now fully trained in the Singapore maths approach and bar modelling.

Since Autumn 2015, teachers have used the textbooks, workbooks, and teacher guides daily. We can already see from the Maths — No Problem! and external maths assessments that pupils’ fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills have improved significantly.

Maths — No Problem! in our school

After using the Singapore maths approach for two years and fully adopting the programme, we exemplify the very best practice in maths mastery teaching.

We consistently develop our approach and, as a result, the children have gained a deep mathematical understanding. Children are encouraged to talk in full sentences about their maths learning, and are really drilled down on what numbers represent. For example, when talking about fractions, children are expected to explain what each number represents. Emphasis is on talking, explaining clearly, and using mathematical vocabulary accurately.
