Developing the Core Competencies

Training>Course Directory

2 days

Duration

12 credits

Earned

This 2-day course is designed for teachers and mathematics leads working in a primary or elementary setting. It aims to provide them with strategies and skills to understand, develop, and evaluate students’ core competencies: metacognition (developing an identity as a learner), visualisation (creating mental images to understand mathematical concepts), generalisation (extending specific findings to broader contexts), communication (expressing mathematical ideas clearly), and number sense (an intuitive understanding of numbers and their relationships). The course will explore how these competencies can be enhanced in the classroom and across a school to improve mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills. Participants will be required to complete an interim task between the two course days. The findings from this task will play a central role in the discussions on the second day, allowing participants to share experiences, insights, and practical implications for their teaching practice. By the end of this course, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to effectively foster these core competencies in their students, leading to improved mathematical thinking and performance across their schools.

Course Objectives

The course is organised to initially focus on each core competency, aimed at enhancing a specific set of teaching and learning capabilities. An interim task between days will focus on one area and will form the basis for discussion on day 2 to further develop the teaching and learning of the core competencies.

Course Content

1. Insights into Metacognition

Educators will explore the intricacies of metacognition, gaining skills to identify and articulate both their own thought processes and those of their students. This module provides strategies for teaching students reflective practices, goal-setting, and progress monitoring. It aims to cultivate classrooms where students are encouraged to develop their identities as learners, leading to heightened self-regulation and adaptable problem-solving strategies.

2. Mastering Visualisation Techniques

This section offers practical strategies and examples for making abstract concepts tangible, enhancing comprehension and memory. We will cover techniques for pattern recognition, understanding relationships, and efficient problem-solving. By making maths visually accessible, students gain a deeper, intuitive grasp of mathematical concepts, fostering critical and creative thinking. Additionally, we'll explore how visualisation connects theoretical maths to real-world applications, making learning more engaging and meaningful.

3. Developing Generalisation Skills

The emphasis here is on the ability to apply learned concepts to new situations. Teachers will learn methods to help students recognise patterns, connect key concepts, and apply knowledge in various contexts. Understanding this process promotes deeper learning and encourages students to approach problem-solving with flexibility. Strategies for guiding students in abstract thinking beyond the classroom will be provided.

4. Enhancing Communication Abilities

Communication is a cornerstone of effective learning. This section is dedicated to improving educators’ capacity to develop clear, thoughtful, and constructive communication among students using a range of methods.

5. Building Number Sense

Focusing on the critical role of number sense in mathematics understanding, this section aids educators in developing approaches to enrich students’ intuitive grasp of numbers and their interrelations.

Upon completing this course, educators will not just have broadened their own skill set across these essential areas but will also possess actionable strategies to develop these abilities in their students. The overarching aim is to enable teachers to assess and guide students toward becoming not only proficient problem solvers but also innovative thinkers capable of applying their learning across a variety of challenges.
