Course Objectives
This course introduces the core concepts and strategies used to teach maths for mastery. For teachers and schools researching maths mastery, this is the perfect first step. In this two hour online seminar, we’ll cover over 20 years of pedagogical research, teaching methods and key learning theories of teaching maths for mastery.
Participants will come out of the course with a strong understanding of the theories that underpin maths mastery and what it takes to implement this approach in your school.
Course Content
Research
- Cover the pedagogical research that underpins the mastery approach and look at how Singapore used the approach to climb to the top of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study scale
Key theorists
- Explore fundamental learning ideas from influential theorists including Jerome Bruner, Jean Piaget, Zoltan Dienes and Richard Skemp
Practical skills
- Learn practical mastery-specific classroom skills and teaching techniques that will immediately help pupils gain a deeper understanding of maths
Learning tools
- Explore the use of three key mastery learning tools — ten frames, number bonds and bar models
Who this is course intended for?
This introductory course is designed for teaching staff of all levels. No prior experience, course work or expertise in maths mastery required.
