This course introduces the core concepts and strategies used to teach maths for mastery. For teachers and schools researching maths mastery, this is the perfect first step. In this two hour online seminar, we’ll introduce pedagogical research, teaching methods and key learning theories of teaching maths for mastery. Participants will come out of the course with an understanding of the theories that underpin maths mastery and the key ideas when using this approach in your school.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to offer the following:

  1. An overview of the fundamental concepts behind a mastery approach to teaching and learning mathematics.
  2. The considerations schools will need to take when adopting a mastery approach in their schools.

Course Content

Research

  • An introduction to the research that underpins the mastery approach and a look at how Singapore used the approach to climb to the top of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study scale.

Key Theorists

  • An introduction to the fundamental learning ideas from influential theorists, including Jerome Bruner, Jean Piaget, Zoltan Dienes and Richard Skemp.

Practical Skills

  • Get introduced to mastery-specific classroom skills and teaching techniques that will immediately help pupils gain a deeper understanding of maths.

Learning Tools

  • Explore the use of three key mastery learning tools: ten frames, number bonds and bar models.

Who this is course intended for?

This introductory course is designed for teaching staff of all levels. No prior experience, course work or expertise in maths mastery required.
