Course Objectives
This teacher professional development course aims to:
- Foster a deep understanding of how mathematics knowledge and strategies develop, including the incremental steps in this development.
- Provide a framework to diagnose a pupil's knowledge and strategy stage, including specific diagnostic questions.
- Cultivate an understanding of the remedial practices necessary to ensure progression through the stages, and accurately diagnose the priority areas for remedial focus.
- Offer an opportunity to review and evaluate your school's mathematics intervention programme, discussing how to maximise the expertise in your school to support children who find maths challenging.
Educators will leave the course with a deep understanding of progression through the knowledge and strategy stages, an insight into the diagnostic questions that can accurately identify a pupil's knowledge or strategy stage, and an understanding of the remedial plan to support rapid progression through the necessary knowledge and strategy concepts.
Course Content
- Understanding Knowledge and Strategy Understand the difference between these two strands of mathematics and their interrelation. Become familiar with the progression of these strands and how to manage them to ensure pupils make optimal mathematical progress.
- Diagnostic Questioning Learn the diagnostic questions that can be used to identify a pupil's knowledge or strategy stage. Understand how this can be utilised in the classroom to quickly and accurately pinpoint areas that may hinder a pupil's understanding of a mathematical concept.
- Understanding Remedial Practice Learn the exercises associated with each development stage to form precise practices to address challenges and support children who struggle with mathematics. Utilise these practices as the basis for ongoing remedial work, intended to be undertaken in the classroom.
- Evaluation of Intervention Programmes An opportunity will be provided to discuss and plan the next steps for your intervention programme, considering diagnostic assessments and the outcomes of diagnostic assessments conducted with pupils.
- Intervention Tools Understand which mathematical tools and representations can be employed as the basis for remedial work that aligns exactly with the Maths – No Problem programme.
Who this is course intended for?
