Diagnostic Assessment and Intervention

2 days

Duration

12 credits

Earned

This 2-day course is designed for primary school teachers, maths leads, intervention specialists, and senior leaders who wish to enhance their understanding of diagnostic assessment and intervention programmes. Participants will learn to use a framework for diagnosing stages of mathematical development and understand precise remediation for each stage of a pupil's mathematical journey. Between the first and second day, there will be an interim task to conduct interviews with children who find maths challenging. The outcomes and subsequent steps will form the basis for discussion on the second day.
By completing this course, you will earn 12 credits towards the Qualification Programme.

Course Objectives

This teacher professional development course aims to:

  1. Foster a deep understanding of how mathematics knowledge and strategies develop, including the incremental steps in this development.
  2. Provide a framework to diagnose a pupil's knowledge and strategy stage, including specific diagnostic questions.
  3. Cultivate an understanding of the remedial practices necessary to ensure progression through the stages, and accurately diagnose the priority areas for remedial focus.
  4. Offer an opportunity to review and evaluate your school's mathematics intervention programme, discussing how to maximise the expertise in your school to support children who find maths challenging.

Educators will leave the course with a deep understanding of progression through the knowledge and strategy stages, an insight into the diagnostic questions that can accurately identify a pupil's knowledge or strategy stage, and an understanding of the remedial plan to support rapid progression through the necessary knowledge and strategy concepts.

Who this is course intended for?

This course is intended for classroom teachers, maths leads, intervention specialists and senior leadership. It builds upon the foundational knowledge acquired in The Essentials of Teaching Maths Mastery course.
