Supporting Learners with SEND in KS1 and KS2

Training>Course Directory

1 day

Duration

How can teachers keep a class learning together when pupils need different routes into the mathematics? This practical, standalone course explores how Maths — No Problem! structures, resources and representations can make ambitious mathematics accessible to more learners, including pupils with SEND.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • identify the central mathematical idea in a Maths — No Problem! lesson and anticipate possible barriers to access;
  • distinguish between a barrier to accessing the mathematics and a gap in prerequisite understanding;
  • adapt representations, manipulatives, language, questioning, routines and scaffolding without unnecessarily lowering the mathematical goal;
  • use pupil responses during Explore, Guided Practice and Independent Work to judge whether an adaptation is helping;
  • plan how support can be maintained, adjusted or gradually reduced as pupils become more independent;
  • recognise when universal classroom provision may need to be supplemented by targeted or specialist support.

Course Content

Participants will explore several examples of adaptations to existing Maths — No Problem! lessons and tasks. They will consider how to vary the route, representation, language, support and time available, while keeping the mathematical destination and level of ambition visible.

Who this is course intended for?

The course is intended for KS1 and KS2 teachers, maths leads and school leaders in mainstream primary schools. Previous attendance at Essentials course is not required.
