Start the class with an engaging, real-world task where learners work in pairs or small groups with concrete materials to problem-solve. This should be a collaborative and talkative environment.

Structured discussion

A teacher-led discussion focused on collaboration, where students share their findings to the class and the teacher resolves any misconceptions that arise. Overtime, students are able to reason mathematically and articulate their thinking, strengthening their mathematical communications and pattern recognition.

Independent practice

Learners work through guided and then independent practice. Designed with variation in mind, students develop a deeper understanding of the topic as they work through.

Journaling

A time for reflection — Students articulate their learning on paper in their own words with drawings or equations. The teacher can then use journaling to assess whether learners have fully grasped the concept.

While you might think having a consistent structure to lessons can become boring for students, this routine allows them to become comfortable and confident with math. Students thrive when given space to explore without fear of making mistakes and to collaborate together. A chatty classroom is a happy classroom. Furthermore, this structure utilizes the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach which supports children’s deep understanding of concepts.

Made for Canadians, by Canadians

We pride ourselves on crafting our program to the students, rather than designing a one-size fits all. That’s why our Canadian Elementary Series includes Canada-specific contexts. Students can see themselves in Andre and Marie-Claude, as well as our cast of other characters, and see their world represented by the flora and fauna specifically selected from Canadian landscapes.

Every child can thrive

With resources that have built-in scaffolding and teacher guidance, it’s easy to create a supportive learning environment. Lessons are designed to adapt to your classroom. Guidance in every lesson explains how you can adjust the problems to be more supportive or more challenging for different types of students.

Furthermore, the design and layout of our program has been created with accessibility in mind, ensuring there are no barriers to learning. With dyslexia-friendly design, colour vision deficient considerations, cognitive load management, visual clarity and a flexible digital platform, our program is accessible for all learners.

Our children are confident to talk about different strategies and are very confident in using a range of models to explain their thinking.
