This advanced, full-day course is designed for primary school teachers, maths leads, and teaching professionals aiming to utilise journalling to enhance their pupils' communication and writing skills in mathematics. Participants will learn about the various types of journals and how to employ them to assess pupils' understanding effectively. The course provides practical guidance on the best practices for implementing journalling in the classroom.
By completing this course, you will earn 6 credits towards the Qualification Programme.

Course Objectives

This teacher professional development course is specifically designed to provide an understanding of several key concepts:

  1. Mathematics is a language. It is crucial that children learn how to effectively speak, read, and write it.
  2. Journalling acts as a powerful tool for pupils to express their mathematical understanding and ideas in writing.
  3. Integrating simple descriptive journals into classroom activities can lead students to rapidly develop deeper and more complex thinking.
  4. Journalling offers a strategy for teachers to accurately assess pupils' grasp of mathematical concepts.

Participants will leave this course with a detailed understanding of the different types of journals, the practical application of journalling, and how to utilise journalling for continuous formative assessment.

This course is an excellent next step after the three-day Essentials of Teaching Maths Mastery, therefore it is strongly recommended that participants attend that course before registering for this one.

He is known for making complex ideas accessible, challenging assumptions with warmth and humour, and helping individuals and teams turn insight into impact.
